Black wood:
The technology of applying lacquers to ebony, where numerous pieces made of mother-of-pearl are embedded, is almost forgotten. Only a few craftsmen are able to reproduce it today, bringing out the glass effect on the surface.

An ancient lacquer technique invented in China 2000 years ago was used for this artwork. It is a natural material, the sap of the lacquer tree, known only in the Far East. In China, it began to be used in ancient times as a protective material and then for artistic purposes. The lacquers were painted, inlaid, engraved, gold, and the most complex were multi-layered lacquers.

Lacquer existed in many colors by adding certain chemicals to the resin, for example, black was obtained by adding carbon like in this work.

Layer after layer of translucent lacquers are applied to the surface of the ebony to produce a glass effect on the surface. Today, only a few craftsmen have mastered this almost forgotten technique. The frame itself becomes a natural extension of the design and an integral part of the artwork.
